about

James "Pigmeat" Jarrett (1899-1995) was a Georgia-born, barrelhouse blues pianist and singer of Geechee descent. When Jarrett was a young boy, his father moved the family from Georgia to a mining camp in Rockhouse, Kentucky. A few years later they relocated to Cincinnati, where Jarrett picked up the basics of blues piano at local “open house” gatherings. He played at homes and speakeasies during the Prohibition years, and over time made an indelible mark on the Cincinnati piano blues sound. In his elder years he was rediscovered and celebrated, and obtained a regular gig playing at Arnold's Grill in Cincinnati, as well as performing at folk festivals in the region and Canada. Jarrett died September 5, 1995 at age 95.
