about

There used to be a very old covered bridge across the Licking River at a place called Sherburne near where I now live in Bath County. It was intentionally destroyed by fire in 1981. The great fiddler, Tom Riley was from Sherburne and he introduced an unusual fiddle tune called Greek Melody (known later by George Lee Hawkins and Greek Medley) to the area in the early 20th century. This tune has themes of Greek Medley set to waltz time. That river was a thread that used to tie a good portion of the eastern half of the state together and the bridge over it at Sherburne was once a beautiful creation that served as a thread connecting communities in Bath County to those in Fleming. The disregard for the importance of those old societal threads stands out to me in an image I have in my mind of the ashes of that burned bridge floating down the river.
