When I was in high school and college I worked on farms in the area where I grew up. There was a lot of tobacco grown in those days and growing tobacco takes a lot of labor. Local labor started getting scarce in the late 80s and by the early 90s, many of the farmers were bringing in migrant workers from Mexico to do most of the work. I worked alongside those migrants for several seasons and heard lots of stories about how the conditions of life were so bad that they decided to leave their beloved homes and families to risk the trip across the desert and Rio Grande so they could work jobs that are at the bottom of American society. For them, living on the bottom in the United States was much better than living in their home communities at all.
