about

The stretch of the Kentucky River between Camp Nelson and Clays Ferry was home to a group of black fiddlers who were the source of much of the repertoire of the white players in central Kentucky. I learned this tune from Ed "Buck" Barnes who lived on a beautiful farm overlooking the river at the mouth of Jacks Creek. He had learned it from a black fiddler in the area named Jim Smith. It bears some resemblance to to the Jim Booker tune "Midnight," but it takes a different course through the weird scale. (key of A) - John Harrod
