I grew up on a small track of land in Clark County, Kentucky in the 70s and 80s. My dad had a pretty good job and we didn’t struggle. We had the best of the homogenous American culture and rural Kentucky culture. The house I grew up in was a couple of hundred feet from the railroad tracks and we got used to freight trains rolling by day and night. We also sometimes walked on the tracks to visit friends. I remember stepping onto the tracks and seeing the sun shimmering on them for long distances in both directions. Mostly I didn’t think about the trains but occasionally I would wonder – where did they come from and where were they going?
